MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama prison system van carrying job applicants collided with a tractor-trailer truck on a rural highway Friday morning that killed several people in the van.
Department of Public Safety spokesman John Reese said "more than four" died in the wreck shortly before 6 a.m. Friday on an isolated stretch of U.S. 82. He said all those killed were in the prison system van.
Prison system spokesman Brian Corbett earlier said as many as seven died in the collision.
Reese said the driver of the truck, which was loaded with wood products, was taken to a Montgomery hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The highway was blocked off about three miles from the wreck site in both directions, with traffic being detoured. Reese said the wreck occurred about 20 miles southeast of Montgomery.
