One Person Dead in Gas Tanker Wreck in Tuscaloosa

A deadly gas tanker wreck Tuesday morning in Tuscaloosa claims the life of the trucks driver.  It happened just after 9am at the intersection of Greensboro and 10th Avenue.

The tanker flipped over killed the driver.  Police still don't know what caused the wreck.

Since the truck was leaking gas, it caused the closure of the two roads for most of the day.  The Tuscaloosa Fire Department's hazmat team was called-out to handle the gas spill and oversee the transfer of gasoline from the rig to another truck.

"At this point we are not exactly sure we do know the vehicle lost control entering Greensboro Avenue.  A speed may have been a factor, but again our reconstruction team is putting the pieces back together," said Captain Greg Kosloff of the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

"Any time we work in a situation like that, cutting open vehicles cutting open doors, we run the risk of creating a spark and in that environment one spark could be a disaster for us,” said Travis Parker of the Tuscaloosa Fire Department.

Police say the truck was fully loaded with gas and was making rounds in Tuscaloosa to refill empty stations in the wake of the Hurricane Ike panic.

Update: The truck driver has been identified as 51-year-old Donald Joe Nelson of Cottondale.
