Basketball and video games, definitely not a typical day at the doctor’s office, but today hundreds of children were seen and screened by a variety of health care professionals; all while having a ball at the fourth annual take a child to the doctor day.

"It’s an opportunity for us to bring all of the best of our health and wellness community under one umbrella; give some young people some free screenings and also have a good time while doing it. Show them that they don't have to be afraid of the doctor”

Cedric Sparks, executive director of youth services heads up this event that includes many different medical specialists as well as nurses from THE UAB SCHOOL OF NURSING who got a chance to gain some valuable real world experience.

"once you get people in the hospital it's like, your just treating them, but if you can prevent certain diseases, that's much better”, said Hollie Gray of UAB.

Even though this event is geared toward providing children with valuable medical services, organizers know full well that children don't make it here on their own.

"There's usually a parent, an aunt a grand parent hear as well that we're often giving that information to”, said Dr Stephenie Wallace of Children’s Hospital.

And with any luck that information will keep many of the attendees of today’s health fair in better than fair health.
