A pregnant woman who went into labor soon after she signed in at a hurricane evacuation shelter in Opelika has given birth to a boy.
New Orleans resident Ashley Mitchell was taken to East Alabama Medical Center and gave birth Tuesday to Melvin Lee Foley after 12 hours of labor. Mitchell and her extended family left home three days before she was due to give birth.
She said she was glad Melvin came before she had to go back home.
Hospital staff and Red Cross representatives have asked her to stay in Opelika a little longer to make sure Melvin is in a healthy environment during his first few days.
Mitchell said she will likely stay for a few days with her in-laws, who moved to Opelika after Hurricane Katrina.
