The Bessemer City Council is the buzz around town after news got out about the arrest of one of their own. Councilwoman Louise Alexander was released on a 20-thousand bond Tuesday night after being charged with 5 counts of violating state ethic laws.

Alexander is accused of using her office for personal gain and soliciting a thing of value as a public official. Bessemer Mayor Ed May says under no circumstance does he condone breaking the law, however Alexander's ability to be a strong city leader speaks for itself.

"I think the fact that she has been elected by the people of their district 3 consecutive terms speaks well of her and what they think of her," said May on Thursday.

Alexander's legal team says they're not going down without a fight. Her attorney, Glennon Threatt says, "She is deeply saddened by the accusations that are included in the 5 counts of the state of Alabama indictment and she looks forward to defending herself against these charges."

As for the mayor, he hopes Alexander will resume her position as councilwoman as she has all along.
