A Lee County reserve officer has been shot and wounded during a traffic stop at Smiths Station, and a sheriff's deputy has shot and captured the suspect.

The reserve officer, who was wearing a protective vest, was treated at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City after the shooting early Wednesday. His name and condition are not yet available.

Sheriff's Captain Van Jackson says the suspect who was shot multiple times by the deputy was taken to Columbus Medical Center. His identity and condition also are not yet available.

The shooting happened about 2:45 a.m. near Smiths Station.

Jackson says the vehicle with four occupants was stopped during a theft investigation. No other details were released.
