It was a chaotic scene on Tuesday outside Birmingham’s IRS building.
Deputies say a man intentionally rammed his SUV into the building just after 10:30am. Investigators say a 48-year-old made a threat to an IRS agent during a phone call earlier that morning.
Deputies say the government worker helped them keep the situation from getting even worse.
"She contacted 911, which the call went to Birmingham who then relayed it to us. So that employee did a fantastic job of maybe avoiding a real tragedy," said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Sergeant Randy Christian.
The driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation. No one else was hurt.
The suspect could face state, and federal charges.
