Copper apparently doesn't pay in Shelby County as Calera police bust a pair of would-be copper thieves in the act Thursday morning.
Two men, ages 17 and 18, were caught by officers after breaking into a home in The Cove development of the Waterford Subdivision. The suspects are believed to be responsible for tearing apart three air conditioning units for their copper coils.
They're also charged with breaking into several vehicles.
Lieutenant Chuck Holcomb of the Calera Police Department said, "Just keep an eye out in your neighborhoods and if you hear anything going on, be sure to give us a call. That's what helped us this morning; an alert neighbor heard the noise outside and gave us a call."
Both men will be charged with burglary, theft of property, and breaking and entering into a vehicle.
