Women have a new option for birth control that doesn't involve pills or surgery. It's an outpatient procedure called Essure, that doctors say provides lasting results. Essure is a permanent sterilization method for patients which involves two tiny nickel titanium coils being inserted in the fallopian tubes while the patient is sedated. Once scar tissue grows into the coils, a barrier is formed preventing eggs from being fertilized. Doctors then do a dye test three months after the procedure to make sure the tubes are blocked. Dr. Rick Munoz has performed the birth control procedure on about one hundred women over the past two years. He says a majority of his patients are in their late 20’s to probably early 40’s, who have decided that their family is complete and they're looking for an alternative to hormonal contraception or IUD's. In San Antonio Texas, where Dr. Munoz practice the cost of essure is about 38-hundred dollars. It is often covered by insurance.
