When gasoline costs four dollars a gallon an extended road trip can easily leave a family budget on empty. But staying home doesn't mean parking your vacation plans.
Some people I spoke with saw the high gas prices not as a limitation to their summer plans, but as an opportunity to explore what their own city has to offer. While at the
McWane
Science
Center in
Birmingham Saturday afternoon I met several families chose to stay close to home.
As little Callie Tyler braved a bed of nails, Kristy Tyler explained that expensive gasoline actually opened their eyes to local attractions. "That's why we got the membership and in fact that's why we go to a lot of different things now in
Birmingham," said Kristy Tyler.
Ted Walker and family skipped their traditional trip to the beach this 4Th of July weekend, but they still planned three days of fun. "We've had a ball. This is our second adventure day and we have another adventure day tomorrow," said Ted Walker.
On the other end of the spectrum the Hall family drove around 450 or miles from Orlando, Florida to visit family, but wound up buying an annual membership to the
McWane
Science
Center . "Well, I'll tell you what we've been to the museum in Orlando and the
McWane Center is probably better in our opinion than the museum in
Orlando so we've had a great time today," said Jeff Hall.
Other local staycation destinations include: the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama Adventure, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum, the Birmingham Zoo and Vulcan Park just to name a few.
