The League of Fandom and Gaming brought the first Play On Con to the Birmingham Airport Hotel for a weekend convention of science fiction and gaming fans.

LFG president Dan Gilbert describes what the convention is all about, "...gaming tournaments. We've got open gaming.  This is board gaming.  We've got video gaming.  We've got lots of different, wacky, off-the-wall, interactive shows that we're doing.  ...fourth of july, and freedom, and we're kind of getting back to the roots of what cons are all about."

Gilbert says the family reunion feel was fitting for the holiday weekend, and Birmingham was a good central location to bring everyone together.

"This is an area that's relatively unexplored, and it's a good area.  I came here several times throughout the year, and i drove around and got a feel for the land.  I shopped a lot of different hotels and we decided to go with it," says Gilbert.

David Ramirez flew in from Pheonix, AZ for the convention and says, "This is the first time i've been to Birmingham, actually.  May not be the last time, but still it's .... it's just very conveniently located.  It was just a good way, just hop from the airport and boom."

That convenience left those attending plenty of time to enjoy each other's company.

"It's being in a safe environment to just be who you are, have a really good time with your friends, and no judgements.  And we're all nerdy; we can play our board games, play our computer games and just have a great time," says Amber Ginsburg, who came with her husband from Atlanta, GA.

The convention continues Sunday at the Birmingham Airport Hotel.  For more information on hours and admission just visit http://playoncon.com/.
