Birmingham homicide detectives have been busy over the last 24 hours.  One homicide occurred and another was discovered, bringing the city’s homicide total to 37 for the year.

On Thursday around 9:45am, a body was found at 2620 29th Street East in Ensley as police were performing a welfare check.  Authorities say 28-year-old Denice Dixon was found inside the residence dead.  The Jefferson County Coroner’s Officer later determined she had died from a gunshot wound and classified the case as a homicide.

Investigators believe that the suspect in the case was the victim’s 32-year-old boyfriend.  They believe the apparent suspect committed suicide in Hoover.

Police continue their investigation regarding this case.

Meanwhile, Friday morning around 12:15, police responded to the 1100 block of 2nd Street West.  When they arrived they found 33-year-old Derrick Pelt shot.  Pelt was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There have been no charges or arrests in this case.

If you have any information regarding either case, you’re urged to contact the Birmingham Police Department Homicide Unit at 254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 254-7777.

There have been 37 homicides in Birmingham this year.  That’s compared to 37 this time last year.
