Push for Medal of Honor

Some local veteran's groups are wondering why one local hero isn't getting the recognition he deserves. They're even starting a petition drive to drum up support.

This may look like a bunch of old army buddies getting together for a seafood dinner.  And it is.  But's also a whole lot more. This is the Blount - St.Clair County Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.  And the wounded soldiers are working on a petition to get one of their own, a decorated war veteran, the Congressional Medal of Honor. "He was doing a very congressional thing as far as we're concerned. Falling on a live grenade to save his friends," says the groups commander, Lonnie Wadsworth.

That soldier is PFC. Johnathon Millican. According to reports, the Locust Fork soldier made his sacrifice in January of 2007 when insurgents attacked his post.  He's already received the Silver Star for what he did. "A person when they take it upon themselves to put themselves in harms way in such a manner, I think, deserves everything that this country can give them," says Vietnam vet Roy Spann.

Private Millican's father, Mitchell, was a part of the meeting. He says this isn't the only group working working on the petition drive to get his son the commendation. "All we want is the department of defense and the army to recognize that he made the act that he did. That he sacrificed his life for his buddies," he says.

Millican says he's also received support from several members of congress. The petition if taken up by legislators would pass a law giving his son the medal of honor.

A message for the regimental commander of PFC. Millican's unit at Fort Richardson Alaska has not been returned.  A public affairs officer for that unit told CBS 42 that he had no information that he could give on the situation.
