Pain at the Pump for Non-Profits

Another day, another slight rise in gas prices: The new national average is now $3.98 a gallon, and while that makes us all cringe, it's devastating to some non-profit agencies.
The Arc of Tuscaloosa County is a United Way organization that provides services for adults with mental disabilities.  They use 15 vans every day to transport their clients to and from their programs. This eats up gas and their budget, which could force some unwanted changes.
"There may be a time in the future when we would have to consider charging a nominal fee for transportation," says Donna Callahan, Director of Operations at The Arc.
Callahan says The Arc's gas bill was $3,447, fast forward to April 2008 and it's up to $6,500.  She adds that a gas charge to clients would be a last ditch effort to make up for rising gas costs.
