Have you been introduced to the subcompact car that gets 50 miles per gallon and costs $5,000 or less? Meet the Geo Metro. Manufactured from 1989 until 2001 certain models of the subcompact car are ultra fuel efficient and get around 50 miles per gallon of gasoline. Gas savvy customers are taking a second look at the modest Metro. The cars are selling like hot cakes on sites such as Ebay, often for more than their Blue Book value.

But the president of one local courier service that once used the Metros is not sold on the idea. "I think they did get good gas mileage and I didn't like the way they held up in the long run. They were a little slow in horsepower, a little slow getting up to speed, they didn't really feel solid," said Allen Holder, President of Professional Couriers of Birmingham.

The key to the Metro's fuel efficiency lies in a less than whopping 1liter 3-cylinder engine.

Holder said his drivers needed more juice than that so his fleet switched to the 4-cylinder Toyota Yaris. They average around 26 miles per gallon in stop and go city traffic which is not bad. But based on the ads there are still a lot of people chasing the 50 mile per gallon dream.
