Alabama State Troopers Plan Holiday Weekend Crackdown

Motorists traveling through Alabama during the Memorial Day weekend can expect to see extra state troopers on the highways. They might also run into a checkpoint.

State Public Safety Director Chris Murphy says all available troopers will be on the roads during the big holiday travel weekend.

In addition, troopers and local police will be setting up checkpoints for the "Click It or Ticket" campaign. That involves checking for seat belts and child restraints.

Murphy says safety restraints were not used in two-thirds of the traffic fatalities investigated by state troopers so far this year.

As of Tuesday, Alabama had recorded 231 traffic deaths for 2008. That's down by 64 from the same time last year.
