Experts predict that the gas price spike will peak during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

AAA Alabama reported Thursday that gas prices leaped another two cents overnight to almost $3.74 a gallon for regular gas. That's about nine cents cheaper than the national average.

Diesel is averaging $4.49 a gallon. Birmingham has the cheapest city average in the state at $3.72. Mobile has the most expensive city average at $3.76.

The new record price is nearly 70 cents higher than a year ago. The comparative website gasbuddy.com says the cheapest gas in the state is still at a station in Athens where it is still 3.57 a gallon, the same price as Wednesday.
