Alabama School Boards Meet to Consider Layoffs

Many city and county school boards will be meeting this week to issue pink slips to non-tenured employees due to the lack of a state education budget.

School boards have to notify non-tenured employees by the end of the school year if they are not being retained. Many schools wrap up classes Friday. In Lowndes County, board member Steve Foster says the board will meet tomorrow to consider layoffs due to the lack of a budget.

The head of the Alabama Association of School Boards, Sally Howell, says she's pleased that Governor Riley plans to call a special session soon to reconsider the state education budget. She says that will mitigate the damage.
