The 2008 session of the Alabama Legislature ended minutes before midnight Monday in disappointment.
House Speaker Seth Hammett gaveled the session to a close shortly after announcing that the education budget had died in the Alabama Senate. Much of the final day was spent in the Senate debating the budget as the House stalled in delaying tactics.
Several key bills died on the last day including a measure to ban smoking in most public places in Alabama and another to end the state sales tax on groceries.
