18-wheeler loses control at I-20/59 junction, overturns onto 3rd Ave.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Birmingham Police are on the scene of an 18-wheeler crash on 3rd Avenue North. 

The wreck happened near the I-20/59 junction. A call came in around 1 a.m. of a vehicle fire. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and quickly put out the fire. 

The 18-wheeler was carrying pallets of Gatorade from Georgia to Mississippi when it crashed, according to Birmingham Fire. The truck was on I-20 when it lost control on the curve at the I-20/59 junction and overturned, coming to a rest on 3rd Ave. N. 

3rd Ave. N will remain closed from 60th Street N. to 4th Ave. N while crews continue to clear the scene. 

Birmingham Fire officials say the truck driver was transported to UAB Hospital after sustaining minor injuries. 

A couple of light poles on the side of the interstate were damaged in the wreck. According to Birmingham Fire, the damage will not affect interstate traffic. ALDOT has been notified of the damage.
