It started late Monday night at the Inverness Landing apartment complex off of Valleydale road.

Investigators say a 28-year-old woman, who was there visiting a friend, quickly became a victim.

"Two males jumped out of the shrubbery or bushes right there and took her car keys and took her car and fortunately her injuries are very minor." said Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry.

Deputies spotted the stolen 2002 Nissan Altima near double oak mountain, and the pursuit was on!

"Deputies deployed spike strips designed to flatten the tires on the car between Chelsea and Harpersville, and the suspect was able to drive around the strips, went into the median, and avoided those strips." said Curry.

Within minutes, six Shelby county deputies were involved, along with Harpersville police.

By the time it was all over, the suspects had fled all the way from Inverness in north Shelby county to Childersburg in Talladega county, where the driver lost control of the car and collided with a tree.

"We were very fortunate in that the time of night that this incident occurred, highway 280's traffic is very low, it allowed us to continue this pursuit at a relatively safe speed for a while." Curry said.

The driver, who has been identified as 20-year-old Anthony Martin of Birmingham, died at the scene.

The other suspect was seriously injured and was flown to UAB hospital.
