Plastic surgery is one way to obtain the perfect body or to slow down the aging process. But for some women, they didn't seek plastic surgery for those reasons.
Plastic surgery can be for appearance or for a persons ability to function…or what some people will say, "more than vanity" alone.
There's no shortage of women willing to spend big bucks to enlarge their breasts. Plastic surgeons rake in a fortune increasing cup sizes. But there's another side that's a polar opposite: Women who actually have breast reduction surgery.
"Because I am a larger breasted lady…"
For 26 years, Leanne McDonald says she was forced to disguise her size DD chest.
"I hide in my clothing. I wear my husband's large t-shirts."
McDonald, a Muscle Shoals mother of four, says having smaller breasts would allow her to wear better fitting clothing without the embarrassment.
"It's not something I care to flaunt."
She's extremely uncomfortable with the amount of staring she endures from men. But that's only part of her reason for breast augmentation. There's a health issue as well.
“It's gonna help me to step out and not be so self conscience."
Grueling back and shoulder problems have brought Leanne to the Mountain Brook Plastic Surgery and Laser Clinic.
"Breast reduction surgery is wonderful if you are having back pain due to large breasts. Sizing improvements are almost immediate you can tell that right off," says plastic surgeon Dr. Sherry Collawn.
The surgeon removes mass, performs some liposuction as well as a breast lift. The before-and-after photos show a real difference.
"I could tell the difference when I woke up, that the pressure was off my chest. Gonna go buy me some frillies," said McDonald.
42-year-old Dawn Campbell has struggled with large breasts since she was nine, and over the years she's been hampered with severe back pain.
"They measured me as a triple D. They keep growing and their growing underneath my arms," said Campbell.
As she grew older, life only got worse. She couldn't even sleep at night.
"Things do tend to enlarge somewhat overtime as you get older."
So did the surgery work? The evidence is in the before and after pictures, and Dawn is all smiles and, more importantly, pain free.
Now she's considering additional cosmetic procedures.
“Everybody told me once you shrink those, your belly is gonna be bigger and I'm thinking that will be another issue."
Deciding on plastic surgery is never easy. When choosing your doctor, patient advocates suggest finding a board certified plastic surgeon and going online to research both the physician, and the procedure.
