10/20/2013 - TALLADEGA, Ala. (WIAT) -Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore says it was a tragic accident. "The motor home was running. They had been inside for some time... and it appeared to be there was an exhaust leak on the motor home."
The couple would have had no idea carbon monoxide was slowing building up inside.
The gas is colorless, odorless, and has no taste. That's why it has earned the nickname "the silent killer."
And it's a byproduct of any appliance that uses fuel to operate... like the stove, fireplace, hot water heater, and even the furnace in your home.
The Centers for Disease Control reports more than 400 americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year.
More than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized.
Its especially deadly for those who are 65 and older.
Many people hold off seeking help because the symptoms mimic the flu... .Headache, dizziness, vomiting and confusion.
But there is something you can do to keep your family safe... And it's as simple as this... A carbon monoxide detector...
It's a small device that no family should be without.
And for Deirdre Hollaway this is a cautionary tale she'll carry with her for the rest of her life.
"You know it might make me think that if I don't see those folks over there fairly early like we have... I might want to check on them now. I probably wouldn't have thought of that until this accident."
