TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) - In the wake of heartbreaking national headlines out of Florida, bullying has returned to the center stage.
Two female students, ages 12 and 14, have been accused of harassing and bullying a classmate until she jumped to her death from a third-story cement plant structure.
In West Alabama, school administrators have been taking a closer look at bullying for the past two years. Last year, the Tuscaloosa City School system implemented the HALT program.
HALT stands for Harassment Awareness Learning Together.
The program is intended to be a proactive and preventative approach to addressing bullying. Now the HALT program is also bringing bullying to the stage.
The drama department from Paul Bryant High School is currently on tour. They will visit all 13 elementary schools in the system to perform an anti-bullying play. Director, Brent Jones, has adapted the story from the children's book, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, which is already an adaption of the Three Little Pigs.
By using the high school students as actors and the performances to engage the younger students, school officials are hopeful that the anti-bullying message will be easy to digest and that it will stick with the young students.
