WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Walker County Schools are taking a zero tolerance approach against drug use for the new school year.
The Walker County Board of Education is reminding parents and students that, according to the 2013-2014 Student Handbook, if a student is involved with drugs and alcohol they can now be expelled for up to a year.
District Three board member Bill Edd Gilbert says, " We're not going to put up with it .... we're not going to have it here at our school. "
This policy went into place late last year, but school board members say this will be the first full school year that the new rules are in place.
They want to get the word out that the district is taking a zero tolerance policy against drug use.
Since the policy went into place, 18 students have been expelled.
They feel the threat is working because drug related cases have gone down 60 percent compared to one year ago.
