BEAR CREEK, Ala. (WIAT) -- UPDATE: According to a release from Norfolk Southern, a major railroad system, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in Bear Creek around 12:15 p.m. on Thursday.
The derailment involved a total of 21 cars, 15 of which were empty. Two empty cars previously carried materials classified as hazardous -- crude oil and potassium carbonate.
The six loaded cars were carrying freight. The freight included were wood chips, mineral oil and cottonseed.
No chemicals were discharged during the derailment.
Now, Norfolk Southern is working to bring equipment to the train tracks in order to move the derailed cars off the tracks.
In all, the train consisted of 76 cars.
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
ORIGINAL: According to the Marion County Sheriff''s Office, a train has derailed in Bear Creek.
The incident happened around 12:30 p.m.
No injuries have been reported, and no chemicals are involved, but a nearby school in Bear Creek has been evacuated.
The accident involved 12 train cars.
