BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- UPDATE (2x): The scene has been cleared and there was nothing found to be suspicious after the bomb techs disrupted the package.
UPDATE: Bomb techs have successfully used a disruptor on the suspicious backpack.
Sgt. Williams says the distruptor did case as small explosion sound in the area immediately surrounding the backpack.
There is still no official word on what was inside the package.
ORIGINAL: A suspicious backpack was left at 5th Avenue North and 18th Street in Birmingham on Friday.
The backpack was discovered around 2 p.m.
Traffic in the area is being blocked, and Sgt. Johnny Williams with the Birmingham Police Department says bomb techs are en route to the scene.
