BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – After months of preparation and long hours of hard work, the memorial to honor the four girls killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing of 1963 has been completed and will soon be shipped to Birmingham.
The life-size statue will be shipped to Birmingham and then assembled and installed before the unveiling ceremony, which is currently scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
"This is very exciting for the Four Spirits Inc. board, the people and organizations who have graciously supported this project and the entire community," Four Spirits Inc. board vice chairman Chervis Isom said in a statement released on Tuesday.
Four Spirits Inc. announced Monday that fundraising for the project has surpassed $200,000. The goal is to raise $250,000 for collections and commitments for the design, construction and installation of the memorial.
Four Spirits Inc. will host a fundraising event for the memorial on Thursday, September 5 at Wiggins Child Quinn and Pantazis LLC in the Historic Kress Building.
Artist Elizabeth MacQueen was commissioned to design and craft the bronze statue by Four Spirits Inc. CBS42 has followed the development of the sculpture closely. MacQueen has put long hours of hard work into creating the life-size memorial.
CBS42 will air an exclusive behind the scenes trip to Berkeley, California, for the making of the monument. The formation of the monument has been a very personal journey for MacQueen.
The special, entitled "Hope and Honor: A Tribute To Four Girls", will air at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 13.
