BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- UPDATE: According to an update provided by the Birmingham Police Department, the victim has been identified as 24-year-old Sheri Williams of Birmingham.
The report states that the victim was holding her 10-day-old child at the time of the shooting. The child was not injured.
So far, no arrests have been made in the case.
The Birmingham Police Department says the incident occurred at approximately 12:55 p.m. on Monday.

ORIGINAL: A new mother was shot and killed inside her home on Monday, and the killing has sparked a desperate search for a killer.
The shooting happened on Joppa Avenue and Georgia Road, in the Gate City community.
Birmingham Police Department Sergeant Johnny Williams says police responded to a shooting call just before 1 p.m. on Monday.
When they arrived, they found a woman dead inside an apartment.
The woman was a new mother, and police are asking the public's help to solve the crime.
"We know a lot of people are reluctant to come forward, but we're hoping someone with information will call Crime Stoppers," Sgt. Williams said. "You can remain anonymous and give us that bit of information. It is owed to this mother. We have a child now who's lost a mom, so we're asking those people who may have information, come forward."
