DRY VALLEY, Ala. (WIAT) -- After a strong wind knocked off the steeple of a Shelby County church, the steeple was headed for a landfill.
That's when Stan and Jo Dawson stepped in. Stan picked up the steeple in his truck, put it in the backyard of his gas station and offered it up for free to a good home.
"We are the church, but that is God's house, and a steeple with a cross on it represents His son," Stan Dawson says, "And it should be used in a mighty way."
Misty and Victor Binkerd answered the call. They had a perfect spot in mind.
"I just couldn't see it going to a landfill," Misty Binkerd says. "It had to have a place, a home."
That home happens to be a castle.
"Once upon a time, a frog met a princess," Victor Binkerd says, "And the frog had to make good, so I built her a castle."
Misty says, "Some people write poetry for their wives, and I think he built it."
Soon after Sterling Castle was finished, the Binkerds opened it up for weddings. It's complete with a moat, a drawbridge and even a knight guarding the entrance.
But as a wedding venue, Sterling Castle was missing something -- until now. Faith is a central part of Victor and Misty's life together.
"Having it as a constant reminder will just be an emotional thing," Misty says.
This symbol of faith and love couldn't have found a better home.
"He's just my soul mate," Misty says, "He's my knight."
