BANKS, Ala. (WIAT) -- More than two dozen dogs have a better shot at a long life now because of a well-meaning group of animal lovers from the Birmingham Area.
Christina Tatum wasn't taking her own dog on vacation.
Instead, she and a group of rescuers loaded up their vehicles with dog crates and hit the road to South Alabama to rescue dogs that were in a deadly situation.
"Miles are not the thing. In your city limits is not the thing," Tatum explained. "If it needs help and it needs rescuing, we're gonna go do it."
The dogs have been held in pens behind George McBride's home in Banks, Alabama, which is near Troy, for over a year.
McBride says the adult dogs were just dropped off nearby and left to fend for themselves.
"They've just got to be too much, you know," McBride said. "And my little Social Security check doesn't go too far."
Tatum and her rescue group, called Faithful Paws Mission, and Jeanette Peterson's Furever Friends Rescue, needed nearly three hours to catch most of the dogs and puppies.
Some of them were harder to catch than others, but McBride is extremely grateful for the help.
"This is a fantastic group. What they're doing, they need many blessings for what they're doing, really," said McBride.
A total of 25 dogs were rescued, and all they needed was some deworming and shots, and then they would be ready for their forever homes.
The dogs didn't have to wait long for that treatment. All of the dogs received dewormer and their first round of shots before they even left the driveway.
In the end, the rescue was a major success, but the dogs are not completely in the clear yet.
"I smell infection on some of them, so that is something that will have to be taken care of very quickly," Tatum commented.
"One of the best ways to prevent this is to please spay and neuter. That is the key to keeping the unwanted pet population down," Peterson said.
A majority of the puppies have already found foster homes. Now, the major goal is finding foster homes and new homes for the adult dogs.
