BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Law enforcement from across the area are cracking down on a serious heroin problem.
A crackdown on heroin distribution landed 41 people across north Alabama in jail on Monday.
Two of those arrested are now charged in connection with the overdose deaths of two young men in Tuscaloosa in early 2013.
Jefferson, Shelby and Tuscaloosa counties have all reported seeing a large increase in heroin deaths over the past five years.
Jefferson County had 13 deaths from heroin usage in 2008 and 58 in 2012.
Shelby County went from having zero heroin deaths in 2008 to 20 in 2012.
Tuscaloosa County increase from two to five during the same amount of years.
