IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Irondale City Council met on Tuesday night to try and shut down a stretch of Grants Mill Road to cyclists.
What could have been a topic that led to a contentious meeting ended up being handled peacefully.
In the end, the cyclists won the day, perhaps the first round in an attempt to keep their route on Grants Mill road.
"Well, we are very excited everything worked out the way we wanted it to," said cyclist Pete Foret.
Whether or not the route that stands between Karl Daly Road and Grantswood Road is dangerous has never been the question.
City Council members and the cyclists now say they'll work together to come up with options to make the road as safe as it can be.
"[We'll] try to work out some things that will not only protect motorists but cyclists at the same time," Foret said.
City council member Terry Bearden said, "If the bicyclers would like to meet with me, I'd be glad to do that if they've got an alternative to work out that we can do to this road to make it safer."
Now, the questions is whether or not those questions will be answered.
Irondale Mayor Tommy Alexander says the city has applied for a grant to widen and straighten Grants Mill Road between Leeds Road and I-459, but there has been no update on when or if that grant will come through.
