BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Summertime is a favorite time of year for many people.
Whether it's cloudy, rainy or sunny, many people like to work on their tan.
UAB Doctor Stephen Russell says unless you are using an SPF of 30 or more, you are in danger for bad burns.
"An SPF of 5 with an artificial tan is not going to give you sun protection that you need," Russell explains. "What is generally recommended is a shot glass amount of sunscreen over your entire body upon your first application."
Even if it's a cloudy day, it's important to not be deceived. Make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen.
UV rays can be just as dangerous on cloudy days or even more so than on a bright and sunny day.
Dr. Russell says people who didn't protect themselves earlier in life are suffering the consequences.
"At this point I have had six skin cancers removed off of my face," he says.
CBS42's Trent Butler has also been forced to have spots removed from his face, arms and legs.
"We didn't have the awareness. So I would be at summer camp for a month at a time, and you're outside every day," Butler says of what may have caused his spots.
Nowadays, Trent and his wife are extra cautious about applying sunscreen to their children, because he doesn't want them to face the pain he has faced.
"I always tell my kids, ‘You don't want to have to go through what I have gone through, so it's not that big of a deal to go ahead and apply that sunscreen.'"
