BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Hudson K-8 parents have one question: how did a homeless man manage to spend the night in a kindergarten classroom?
Lindsey Chapman had just dropped her daughter off in the school cafeteria when she spotted the man.
"There was a homeless man asleep on the bean bags. I had to get the little kids scissors and escort the man out," Chapman said, "But I didn't want to bring him in the hallway because all of the children had started coming in after breakfast."
Chapman was on her own.
"When I first seen him, I was scared," Chapman said. "He was barefoot, he was homeless."
Word of the intruder spread to other parents quickly.
"How did this man get in this school like this," Andrita Doster asked. "And he a homeless man, living in this school for two days, how did ya'll not know he was in this school?"
Parents say they were told items in the classroom had been misplaced for several days, and a radio was on one morning when they opened the classroom doors.
"He's rambled through other teachers' lockers and cabinets and dressers," Brittany Mabry said. "He's also been riding a scooter through there, blasting a radio through there."
Chapman said the teachers started screaming when they saw the man.
"He jumped up when the teacher turned the lights on. It's like he overslept," Chapman said. "Because he got books hanging out of the back where he props the door open, and like he normally be out before school started, but I guess he overslept this time."
Parents are thankful no one was hurt, but they want better security at the school.
"He came out with his hands up, you know, no harm, but he could have been the Taliban, you know," Chapman said. "We've been seeing people killing kids all day."
The Birmingham Police identified the man as 50-year-old Danny Cobb.
