HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) - Hanceville Police took time Saturday to teach a free firearm safety class for women.
"I feel like now I could protect myself if I needed to," Participant Mandy Holloway said.
Seemingly everyone at the event thinks recent changes to Alabama's gun laws are a good thing.
One change that's caught a lot of attention allows people to keep a firearm in their vehicle while at work, no matter what the boss says. The gun would have to be out of sight and locked in the vehicle. Workplace rules about guns anywhere else on company policy still apply.
"I think you should have a right to have a gun where you need it. If you need it there, I think it is our right," Holloway continued.
Not everyone supports the new law. Take the Business Council of Alabama for example. They say business owners also have rights and should be able to opt out of the law.
Others are concerned access to firearms at work will create safety issues.
"It's a terrible idea. Mainly, if somebody is upset with somebody at work, they could just run out to their car," Charlene Cannon said.
The new law also:
- Clarifies that it is not disorderly conduct to carry a visible, holstered pistol in public
- Clarifies a concealed carry permit is not needed to carry pistol that is unloaded and locked in a compartment in a vehicle, as long as it is not within reach of the driver or passenger
