BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The city of Trussville has a problem – a sinkhole located on the corner of Chalkville Mountain Road and Service Road.
The sinkhole was the subject of an emergency meeting held by the Trussville City Council on Friday afternoon.
The hole has been partially refilled by crews, an attempt to keep it from getting worse.
However, only 24 hours prior to it being partially refilled on Friday, it was nearly 40 feet deep.
TRUSSVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) -- A damaged steel pipe is the apparent cause of the sinkhole.
"[The sinkhole] will eventually tear up all of the infrastructure through there if we don't fix it now," Trussville mayor Gene Melton tells us.
Over the years, the pipe allowed water to erode the dirt around part of a storm sewer.
The original plan was for the city to buy the materials and for the country to do work. Now, the county is saying they've got not responsibility here. "The through roads, and this would be classified as a through road, were given over to the cities back in 2009," Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight said. "Therefore, the county sees this as a City of Trussville issue."
Mayor Gene Melton says payment responsibility will have to wait. He says the hole is a safety hazard and that the city will fix it. Some of the materials for the repairs are already in town, but others won't be delivered until Monday, when construction is scheduled to begin.
The plan is for the project to be finished by Wednesday.
Additionally, it is not likely to cause any major traffic problems while it is under construction.
Commissioner Knight has been working to try to get the city and county to work together on this issue. He says he will continue to do so.
