BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- A conference to help stop abuse in the family environment wrapped up at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Wednesday.
Law enforcement gathered with counselors, pastors and victims of violence for an eye-opening experience.
A reenactment at the Birmingham Police Department's Victims Issues Conference made the point abundantly clear: domestic violence is no respecter of persons.
"Domestic violence comes across all social entities, and it comes across all social statuses," said Carolyn Adams, who works for Project SAFE (Stopping Abuse in the Family Environment).
Project SAFE offers a batterers' intervention program. Birmingham's Municipal Court refers perpetrators to a 26-week program to stop the violence during the intervention program.
Pastor J.R. Thicklin, who spoke at the conference, is an advocate for victims of domestic violence.
"Children were suffering, families were suffering, the church was suffering and they were wearing masks," Thicklin said.
Thicklin says masks only hide domestic violence for so long. The church needs to know the reality of domestic violence so they can help break the silence.
