"Life jackets save lives, you have to have it on," said marie police officer John Williams.
Every boat must have one life jacket for each person on board and if you leave the boat for the water, even an expert swimmer can benefit from wearing it.
"You never know what can happen to you out there, you cramp up. we never know, we' )re not promised tomorrow so we want to make sure you're doing everything you can to stay above the water level," he adds.
Whether you're on a jet-ski, kayak or inter-tube, stay aware of water levels and keep an eye out for rocks and trees.
"The rocks and shoals out here they're fun to go down but you need to take precaution and keep your body above the rapids as you go down."
Larry Clark and the guys at Adventure Shoals in Centreville have been sending families off onto the Cahaba River in tubes for six years.
"You always want to keep in mind that the river is natural in its flow and at times it can be dangerous."
And conditions are ever changing.
"There are a lot of deep holes, you may see swings along the way, places to jump off, but we recommend that you don't do that. Swimming around in the river, that's awesome, but diving in that's always a hazard because the boulders and shoals can moved and shift.
Larry also recommends staying with your group when tubing or rafting on water ways.
