BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- It has been a rough few years for Birmingham City Schools -- from serious money problems to a board member pleading guilty to ethics violations.
Now, the accreditation issue looms ahead, threatening high school students' chances of getting into good colleges. Parents are demanding more from school board members.
"Basically we were told our child couldn't go there (public school), that it wasn't really an option for us," Peggy Bigo said. "Which was really shocking."
Peggy Bigo and her son Avery moved to Birmingham about a year ago. She and her husband made the choice to enroll Avery in public school, despite what she heard.
"We really need that leadership that will allow the public schools, the local schools individually to make that environment for the children to have safe, good learning environments," Bigo said.
She said her son had a great first year at Avondale Elementary. She wants to feel confident in Birmingham City Schools as he gets older.
Janyetta Jones' daughter Alise also attends Avondale Elementary. She's happy with her daughter's education, but she wants the school board to get their act together.
"Everything has changed with the economy, and you don't have the money that you used to have for the system," Jones said. "Because you don't have the money, that does not mean that the education system should go down."
Both Bigo and Jones will be hitting the polls Tuesday morning, setting a good example for their children and charging the board members they elect to do the same.
