ALABASTER, Ala. (WIAT) - July 1st will be a historic day for the City of Alabaster. The city's new school system will finally be independent of Shelby County.

But next years that will change.
Starting with the 2014-2015 academic year student in kindergarten through sixth grade will be transferred to their nearest county school.
Then each following year one additional grade will be transferred out of the city.the change over will be complete by 2020.
At that point only students zoned within city limits will be allowed to attend an Alabaster City School.
Other cities within shelby county will keep a close eye on the successes and failures in Alabaster this year.
