BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - The Birmingham City Council says they support colleague Lashunda Scales as she fights charges related to her elected position.
"The council waits a resolution to this matter and remains morally and collectively supportive of Councilor Scales," the council said Tuesday afternoon in a written statement.
Scales turned herself in to Jefferson County authorities Tuesday morning, facing charges of ethics law violations and attempted interference with election.
"I think that most residents are tired of the drama," Birmingham City Council President Roderick Royal said.
Although he would not elaborate, Royal suggests the charges are politically motivated.
"I think when the story is really told there will be a lot of things that come out to show that there were probably some other agendas here," he said.
Birmingham City Councilor Johnathan Austin also expressed support for Scales while hinting at political motivation.
"We are elected officials. People have put their hope and trust in us when they voted for us. We are held to a higher standard. With that, we also know that politics is a part of everything we do," Austin said.
Scales will be allowed to continue her role on council unless she is convicted.
District Attorney Brandon K. Falls released a statement on the charges on Tuesday, which can be viewed by clicking this link.
