JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) -- A simple request for prayers by a Jasper man on Facebook led to the donation of 1,500 brand new Bibles for inner city kids in Birmingham.
The Bibles will be given away at the "Ball 4 the Gospel" basketball games held at Huffman High School in Birmingham Saturday at 2 p.m. Former NBA players will be participating.
Organizers say the goal is to get Bibles into the hands of children who can't afford them.
Jasper resident Al Blanton spearheaded the effort to get the Bibles for Saturday's event.
He expected to spend about $10,000 on the Bibles, but within ten minutes someone posted a link which offered the books for $1 each.
He says a friend immediately donated the $1,500 needed to buy the Bibles.
The church is also giving away 1,500 basketballs, 400 basketball goals and $1,500.
