PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Historic preservationists in Prattville say a hole in the roof is putting an 1854 building in peril unless repairs are made.
The Historic Prattville Redevelopment Authority has deemed the situation an emergency for the now-closed Continental Eagle cotton gin mill.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/1hws2Jk) that Continental traces its roots back to Daniel Pratt, the town's founder, who built his gin shops on the banks of Autauga Creek. Five historic buildings on the sprawling 22-acre site provide the anchor for the downtown historic district.
Continental shipped production overseas and closed the site in December 2011.
The authority is seeking bids to get the section of roof repaired. City Planner Joel Duke said the redevelopment authority is acting cooperatively with Continental, and the authority will pay for the repairs.
