HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) - The Alabama senate has passed a bill that would expand the types of medications nurse practitioners are able to prescribe in the state.
The bills sponsor, Republican Senator Greg Reed of Jasper, says it would expand access to health care in rural areas.
Brookdale Place in Homewood holds a health and wellness fair for its residents annually.
Doctors like Shane Burchfield see such health fairs as a chance to reach the public.
"Well the best thing about the health fairs in my opinion is education for the public because I think gone are the days where you can just hang your shingle up and expect people to come to you," he said.
From blood pressure checks to other screenings, health fairs expand access to medical care and continue health education.
Tony Carrol, a pharmacy student at Samford University, which partners with the Perry County Health Department to host health fairs there says there aren't many physicians in rural areas like Perry County, Carrol feels the more providers the better.
"I think the role of several health care providers, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physicians' assistants are expanding and I think it's all good to help especially patients in rural areas to have better access to health care."
The bill would allow nurse practitioners, with physician supervision to prescribe certain painkillers, antibiotics and other medicines that they can't prescribe under current law.
