BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Neighborhoods in east Birmingham are still very much in need of disaster relief.

Birmingham councilwoman Lashunda Scales is heading up a tornado cleanup effort Saturday morning beginning at 8:30.

Volunteers will help move debris from resident's backyards and into the right of ways to be cleared by city crews.

"We're here from the beginning to the end, so that means we were out here last week, were out here on tomorrow and we'll be out here for as many Saturdays as necessary until we get this area totally restored," says Councilor Scales.

Scales said the area has not been declared a disaster area by Mayor Bell, and that's why volunteer efforts are so important to these communities.

Various insurance companies will be here doing an information session, they want victims to be aware of ways they could potentially be scammed by fraudulant companies.

If you'd like to lend a helping hand, you can meet up Saturday morning at 8:30 at the Fraternal Order of Police parking lot, at 2988 Winewood Road.

Breakfast will be served at 7:30 and and lunch will be served to volunteers throughout the day.
