Update: Five people killed in Ensley

"It's tragic to have this many people that are found deceased in one location," said Sgt. Johnny Williams, Birmingham Police Dept.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) It's the misery of losing a loved one, times five.

"It's a lot of people that know each other in the neighborhood, you know it's a travesty for five people to lose their lives, young people at that," said William Avery, who works in the neighborhood. "It's just, you know it's a sad day in the neighborhood."

Police received a call about a robbery in progress around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Responding officers found five people dead inside inside a house at 3113 Avenue S.
According to Sgt. Johnny Williams, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

"One homicide is bad, I mean, but in this case it's tragic to have this many people that are found deceased in one location. So we want to try to gather this suspect or suspects as soon as possible because they're a danger if they're running around the street," said Sgt. Johnny Williams, Birmingham Police Department.

People who live in the area are still struggling to understand how it could happen.

"I've got a family too you know. Five people? Man...that's scary. I stayed in Ensley all my life. All my life I've stayed in Ensley...it don't make no sense," said Terry Jones. "Can't even feel safe in your own house, you know, cause of stuff like this going on. You know what I'm saying? It’s just; they need to put an end to this. Go get a job man. Robbing? It ain't worth nothing. You know what I'm saying? It's just sad. It's a sad situation."

Police urge anyone with information about the killings to come forward.

"We know someone may know some information with a crime this big. We want any information no matter how small you may think it is so we can work on it, possibly piece it together with this investigation we have going right now. So we want to get this person off the street as soon as possible," said Sgt. Johnny Williams, Birmingham Police Department.
