CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) - Along with buildings, thousands of trees were either uprooted or destroyed by high winds and tornadoes in April.
There's an effort to restore Cullman's landscape called the Tree Recovery Campaign, which is meant to replace trees in Northern Alabama.

Many of these trees were planted when Cullman was built in the 18-70's.

To help replace them Cullman is giving away three-thousand trees free-of-charge .  The program is a joint effort with the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Alabama Forestry Commission.

Residents say the reality is they won't see the fully grown trees in their lifetime but hope grandchildren and great grand children will be able to enjoy them.

The city expects to start giving out trees in about two months.
