As of July 1st, those living outside of Adamsville city limits, yet within their police jurisdiction, are now paying 1.75% more sales taxes to the city of Adamsville, all thanks to an ordinance passed by Adamsville in may."We don't need any more taxes the way the economy is at this point, you know," says resident Valarie Henry.
In a letter to taxpayers dated June 2, 2009, Alabama state law, Section 11-40-10, was highlighted as the reason why this is legal. It states in cities with less than 6,000 inhabitants, like Adamsville, the police jurisdiction shall extend to adjoining territory within a mile and a half of its corporate limits...this includes Forestdale where Westwood auto parts owner Donny parker can't believe this is happening.
"If it’s what is said, if it’s legal, we'll do it but it, still I think it's taxation without representation."
City of Adamsville Mayor Pam Palmer was unable to go on camera today, however through email tells me the increased sales tax is to make up for the effects of the Jefferson County budget cuts and help them maintain their roadways.
Mayor Palmer says they now have to pay for maintenance on Minor Parkway, Union Grove Road and Hazelwood Road. But still, residents paying the new increase aren't happy.
"Maybe we need to strike, maybe we need to just keep fighting and maybe even I guess stop shopping in certain places until they decide to back off," says resident Adrianne Parker.
