Birmingham, Al (CBS42) FBI agents will travel to Peru to inspect the hard drive of Joran van der Sloot's laptop. CNN's
InSession is reporting "federal agents will meet March 14 with two agents of the Peruvian National Police High Technology Crime Division at the Peruvian National Police Headquarters in Lima."
The obvious hope is that van der Sloot's computer will contain clues to help solve the 2005 disappearance of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway on a school trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving a club with van der Sloot and two other local teens. He has never been charged in her disappearance but is still considered the prime suspect.
The FBI also won an indictment against van der Sloot on wire fraud and extortion charges. They claim he took money from the Holloway family promising them information about Natalee's fate but never delivered any relevant information.
The laptop to be examined is also a critical link in van der Sloot's legal troubles in Peru. He's in the Castro Castro prison facing charges he killed a 21 year old Peruvian student. The body of Stephany Flores was found in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room. In a grisly coincidence, her body was found five years to the day of Natalee's disapearance.
Peruvian justice authorities say van der Sloot confessed he killed Flores when she found material relating to Holloway on his laptop...the same computer the FBI will now get a chance to examine.
The legal case in the alleged Lima murder is still pending. Prosecutors want a thirty year sentence claiming it was an unusually brutal crime. Van der Sloot's lawyer says it was a crime of passion and wants a 3-5 year sentence.
